Senior Environmental Specialist

Position Profile

Job Type: Full-time

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in biology, earth science, environmental science, civil or environmental engineering or related discipline. Graduate-level degree preferred; and eligibility for registration as a P.Eng., P.Geo. or R.P.Bio. desirable but not required.

Technical competencies:

  • Experience in developing and implementing technical environmental programs in relation to resource development, and preferably in mining;
  • Demonstrated leadership and success in working with multi-stakeholder groups (industry, government, First Nations, public and ENGO's) to develop environmental protection plans or programs;
  • Demonstrated leadership and success in working with corporate multi-disciplinary teams including operational, engineering, and environmental staff, to develop environmental protection plans or programs;
  • Experience with Environmental Management Systems and risk management frameworks an asset;
  • Clear strategic planning and thinking, with evidence of having set strategic direction and achieved goals;
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills;
  • Ability to produce coherent and persuasive business cases and strategies;
  • Able to think creatively and innovatively;
  • A broad range of environmental knowledge gained through short courses of study, in-depth experience and having worked in this specialty for at least 8 years;
  • Environmental law in BC; and
  • Demonstrated experience of managing budgets

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure compliance with effluent permits
  • Coordinate contractors to ensure work requiring outsourcing (i.e. EEM sampling) is performed correctly
  • Manage WQ databases to stay current on emerging trends in data
  • Plan/implement treatment technologies
  • Liaise with regulators
  • Liaise with stakeholders as required
  • Liaise with other mining operations in the region to ensure compatibility with programs and reduce duplication of effort (i.e. fish tissue sampling)
  • Review and edit reports (internal and from consultants) prior to release to upper management
  • Review and update EMP's as required
  • Process information and relay as needed to senior management
  • Ensure sampling is carried out with a high level of precision in a manner that is consistent across all sites
  • Apply for and follow up with permit amendments as required
  • Other duties as assigned
